On December 17, 2013, music critic Scott Cantrell of the Dallas Morning News wrote:
The Dallas Symphony Orchestra has named American conductor Karina Canellakis assistant conductor, starting in 2014.
She will conduct youth concerts, select DSO on the GO appearances in suburban communities and pops concerts, and will assist in preparing the orchestra for classical concerts.
“Karina won over the orchestra and me with her insightful musicality and command of the score,” said music director Jaap van Zweden. “She will be a wonderful addition to our staff, and I look forward to her ongoing development as an exciting and inventive podium artist.”
A New York native, Canellakis holds a bachelor’s degree in violin from the Curtis Institute of Music and a master’s in orchestral conducting from the Juilliard School. Her conducting teachers at Juilliard were Alan Gilbert and James Ross, and she has also participated in international master classes with Bernard Haitink and David Zinman.
As a violinist, she has played with the Berlin Philharmonic and Chicago Symphony, and she has served as guest concertmaster with Norway’s Bergen Philharmonic, whose music director is former DSO music director Andrew Litton.”
